Wear To Work Wednesday: Plaid Skirt and Nautical Stripe Top
As reported in the Top Fall 2014 Wearable Trends post, plaid is a huge trend this season. That doesn’t mean it can’t be worn in the workplace. One great way to wear plaid is to have fun mixing them with stripes. The key to mixing prints is to make sure there is a common color. In today’s Wear to Work feature, the common color is navy. For both looks below, I’ve paired a red and navy plaid skirt with a navy stripe top. These looks will work great in business casual or creative work environments.
The first Wear to Work look of inspiration includes pairing a plaid skirt with a nautical striped boxy top. A popular way to wear boxy tops is to stuck the front and leave the back untucked. If your plaid skirt is high waisted, you can leave the shirt untucked and have the shirt fall on top of the skirt. One color we don’t see often in footwear is gray. So instead of pairing this look with the typical tan/nude pumps, switch things up and pair with gray shoes and a handbag. Since the temperature is a little chilly in the morning and reaches high 60s/low 70s by midday, a leather jacket serves as the perfect outerwear to complete the ensemble!

The second look pairs a nautical stripe sweater with the plaid skirt. Although both looks include stripes, the second outfit is a preppy one thanks to the Peter Pan collar. For this look, I included gold accents via the shoes and accessories. The sweater looks like it’s short enough that it doesn’t have to be tucked into the skirt. For colder months, add tights and ankle booties. Complete the look with a double breasted pea coat to keep warm.

Of course these looks serve as inspiration. If you have a plaid skirt in other colors, you can create the same look by pairing a stripe top or sweater with your own skirt as long as there is a common color.
great look… the forever21 skirt is too tight for work. I need work appropriate version with the Forever21 price.
